Cineworld has unveiled four stars of Barnsley, who have been recruited to welcome the local community to their new local cinema at The Glass Works, opening on Friday 23rd September.

This brand new next-generation cinema will boast 13 screens, offering the best technology available on the market, including IMAX with Laser, 4DX, ScreenX and a new on-site Starbucks.

Barnsley is proud of its cultural heritage and is known for cultivating some of the UK’s most influential artistic talents, from sculptors to YouTube stars and everything in between. Cineworld is honouring this legacy by putting these four local artists at the heart of their campaign:

  • David ‘Dai’ Bradley - Highly regarded actor known for playing Billy Casper in the acclaimed cult film Kes, directed by Ken Loach and shot in Barnsley in 1969
  • Graham Ibbeson - Professional artist known for realistic and figurative sculptures such as Stan and Ollie as well as the Barry Hines Kes tribute statue in the town centre
  • Joanne Harris - Award-winning author best known for her novel Chocolat, which was adapted into a film starring Johnny Depp, Juliette Binoche and Judi Dench
  • Lee Hinchcliffe - Social media personality, YouTube star and CBBC television presenter

These four Barnsley natives have also been announced as the first four Unlimited members of Cineworld Barnsley, giving them access to unlimited films and advanced screenings at their new local cinema. Customers can join them by signing up now to Unlimited for just £15.99 a month. David Bradley said: “It makes you feel good to go to the movies, so to have a state-of-the-art, all-singing and dancing cinema like the Cineworld… What more could you want?”

Graham Ibbeson said: “I can’t wait for this new ScreenX… this is all the way around you, you’re actually there. Unbelievable. And also, bringing my grandkids as well, they’ll love that 4DX!”

On Thursday September 22nd, Cineworld and The Glass Works will be hosting an outdoor festival in celebration of the cinema’s arrival. Kicking off at 5pm in The Glass Works square, attendees can walk along a red carpet from their cars to the square for an array of fun activities.

In honour of James Cameron’s Avatar, which is being re-released on Cineworld’s opening day, Na'vi characters will be performing acrobatics. Festivities also include a mechanical 4DX rodeo chair and live music by local saxophonist Catherine Rannus who will be performing songs from films.
Tickets on sale for Avatar on Monday 12th September from Cineworld.com.
