Earthkind, the UK’s leading sustainable bedding brand whose mission is to create a better tomorrow for the planet, has committed to double the amount of waste it saves from landfill - which it repurposes for use in its products - by the end of 2023.
The company, which manufactures synthetic and natural duvets and pillows, saved an estimated 750 cubic meters of feather and down fillings from landfill last year, and recycled the equivalent of 350,000 plastic bottles into luxury bedding making it the UK’s most suitable bedding manufacturer. Any additional items required during production are also responsibly sourced.
Earthkind, which is made by leading bedding expert John Cotton, has also recently been certified as Zero Waste to Landfill across its whole product range and its factory, making it the first bedding product to be given the accreditation. It also holds a Global Recycled Standard certification.
Taking a different approach to its synthetic range, Earthkind uses 100% recycled materials, including plastic bottles and clothes that would have otherwise ended up in landfill. In its natural collection, feathers and down are sourced, hand-checked and then carefully washed. The filling is then heat treated to ensure it is both dry and sterilised, resulting in a new premium blend of filling that’s every bit as luxurious as the original.
Neil McMillan, director, Earthkind, says: “Earthkind is built on a desire to make it easier for people to choose recycled products, without having to compromise on quality.
“Choosing to operate in this way is about putting the planet first by re-using valuable natural materials and resources and reducing the amount of post consumer waste going to landfill and World Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to doing even more in 2023. By doubling the amount of waste we save from landfill, we are all – Earthkind and our customers – doing the right thing for our environment.
“Our aim is to be able to replicate this year on year, with a focus on doubling the amount of waste we save each year.”
Earthkind hopes that in the future, products bought by its customers will make its journey back to the company, to be recycled and reused to produce a new set of bedding.
