Leeds isn’t lacking when it comes to great cinemas, from the multiplexes to the award-winning Hyde Park Picture House and Cottage Road in Headingley.

But now, a new independent cinema that can only be used for private screenings has emerged and should go right to the top of your must-visit list - found in a cosy corner of Leeds Dock.

The boutique private hire cinema has opened on the new Level 2 floor of Department, with seating for up to 60. Featuring a state-of-the-art screen with surround sound system, the venue costs £100 per hour to hire or £700 for a full day.

It makes an ideal space for anyone looking for alternative celebration ideas, or businesses looking for a different kind of Christmas party venue (back-to-back festive films in matching pyjamas, anyone?) or team away day. The capacity is 38-60 with flexible seating arrangements, from plush sofas to theatre-style event seating.

Enquire about hiring the cinema through the Department website.

Department’s general manager, Amy Matthams, explains: “The new cinema is an amazing addition to Department, an ideal option to go local for a private hire event at the movies, taking your pick of indies, classics or even your own blockbuster film.Alternatively, it’s a great way to change up your corporate event with a unique backdrop for presentations, speaker events or brand launches.”

Department at Leeds Dock offers the ultimate coworking, private offices and creative studios in the city, all brimming with style and individuality. Since opening in the former waterside casino in February 2023, level one and the mezzanine workspaces of Department are now largely occupied. Level 2 of the four-storey building opens this Autumn, offering 3,860 sqft of more private offices and meeting rooms, a content creators suite, podcast facilities, and social areas including phone booths, the private cinema and event space with a bar.
