The inaugural week saw a calendar of events take place across Yorkshire celebrating and showcasing sustainability, representation in beauty, inclusion and women’s health and wellbeing.

With events at Grantley Hall, The Ivy York, Harvey Nichols, The Body Shop, John Lewis, The Everyman Cinema in Harrogate and Koncept Studies, 100s of women (and a few men) took part in the very first This is Yorkshire Beauty Week festival that aimed to put the spotlight on the key issues and topics that are important to women of today.

The Yorkshire Businesswomen supported Rut to Rocking event took place on the Tuesday evening of This is Yorkshire Beauty Week after a day spent at The Ivy York when over 30 women took part in a lunch and panel event all about social media and beauty.

The idea behind the Rut to Rocking event was to bring together a team of experts covering makeup, hair and styling to share inspiration, ideas and tips, and to encourage women to feel good about themselves. Dr Lubna Khan-Salim, organiser of the Yorkshire Beauty festival said: “We’ve all experienced getting stuck in a rut when it comes to our makeup choices, how we wear our hair and what clothing we feel comfortable in. We lead busy lives! BUT even if it’s comfortable because it’s what we know, it doesn’t mean that it always makes us feel good. And just because we reach a certain age, doesn’t mean we stop being interested in fashion and make up.”

The group enjoyed drinks provided by Spirit Sisters before Dr Lubna welcomed the ladies who had come from across Yorkshire including Wakefield, Bradford, York, Selby and Leeds before they headed into their allocated masterclass, spending 30 minutes with each expert before rotating to the next session.

The glam squad included:

  • Abi from Blow me Bouncy who did demonstrations whilst sharing her essential hair products and multi-use tools
  • Make up maestro, Katie Forrest did demos including on the lovely Elaine and gave her top tips on makeup, and looks to suit all ages
  • Dawn Farr from Apparel Boutique highlighted the power of colour and the versatility of dresses to suit different ages and body types

Dr Lubna added: “The evening was a lovely opportunity for a group of ladies, many of whom had never previously met and of mixed ages, to get together, make new connections, share experiences and stories in a positive, friendly and welcoming environment. We shared plenty of laughter, shed a few tears and came together to celebrate our individual beauty. It was a joy to be part of.”

Emma Clapham, one of the attendees said: “It was a fantastic event. The speakers were brilliant, and I gained so much from each session. It was very well managed, relaxed and very friendly. I’ve already implemented lots of advice that was shared.”

Elaine Petcher (pictured below) who received a makeup makeover on the night said: “For me, the event was life changing. I had a brilliant evening meeting lots of new ladies, learning new things and I am so much happier and confident in myself.”
