NFTS Leeds is thrilled to introduce a pioneering new Certificate in Intimacy Coordination for Film and TV. This intensive six-month course is designed to cater to the growing demands of the UK’s entertainment industry. The curriculum, developed in collaboration with seasoned Intimacy Coordinators from the UK, Spain, and the US and under the advisory of BECTU’s Intimacy Coordinator training branch, aims to set a new standard in the field.

Under the expert guidance of renowned Intimacy Coordinator Haley Muraleedharan, NFTS Leeds is now actively seeking ten aspiring students to embark on this ground-breaking part time course, set to begin in May 2024. The course will be delivered in person at the National Film and Television School’s Leeds base, situated within ITV’s iconic Emmerdale Studios, and online with specialist tutorials and personalised one-to-one sessions.

Over the duration of the course, participants will complete a total of 150 hours of comprehensive training, working with a vibrant community of industry professionals. The programme will equip participants with the essential skills needed to work safely on set and learn the intricacies of communicating with cast and crew to ensure a comfortable working environment when shooting intimate scenes. Students will also be given the opportunity to network and develop their own mentorship connections as they prepare to join the industry.

The emergence of Intimacy Coordinators marks a pivotal shift towards a more conscientious and inclusive filmmaking environment. An indispensable asset to any production, Intimacy Coordinators serve a dual role as choreographers and advocates for actors. They foster an on-set culture rooted in consent, offering steadfast support to performers and crew members throughout every phase of production. Beyond overseeing intimate scenes, their remit extends to co-ordinating any sequences involving physical contact, emotional intensity or nudity.

Head of NFTS Leeds, Méabh O’Donovan commented: “As the role of Intimacy Coordinator gains greater prominence, NFTS Leeds has collaborated with experienced practitioners in the field to craft a training programme poised to meet the evolving needs of the industry. After the success of previous short courses run by the NFTS in this area, this newly developed certificate underscores our commitment to pioneering advancements in professional standards and nurturing conscientious and inclusive on set environments."

Intimacy Co-ordinator and NFTS course leader Haley Muraleedharan added: “As a long-term advocate of creating achievable opportunities in the North of England and as a member of the BECTU IC training group, I’m thrilled that the NFTS have such a commitment to providing this high quality, certified Intimacy Coordinator training in Leeds. All tutors involved are highly experienced intimacy professionals working in industry across HETV and film. To have a network of best practice for students to draw upon throughout their certification journey is an incredible career boosting opportunity, in a department where it has historically been difficult to navigate a viable route in.”
